I am aware that many will have heard of John Bunyan and possibly read his most famous allegory The Pilgrims Progress but it is worthwhile doing a short message on this lesser known work called The Holy War.  There are many editions available, both second hand and new and this particular one has been simplified into modern English.  Bunyan was a great Christian and a gifted writer.  This particular book concerns the war waged against the city of Mansoul by the devil and his agents and also the struggle against temptation and doubt that many of God’s people honest souls face as they walk with the Lord.  Probably, this simpler version of the allegory would be suitable to be read around the meal table a bit at a time with your children.  There will be profit for all.  Prince Emmanuel comes to the salvation and rescue of His precious city of Mansoul.  It belongs to Him for it is His chosen dwelling place, the wicked Diabolos is a usurper who has gained entry and must be driven out with all his hordes and the city made the safe home to Emmanuel and to the untold blessing of mansoul.  As you would expect there is plenty of spiritual doctrine to be found here, Bunyan being a Puritan writer pens things from that perspective but no reader, young or old can fail to gain richly from a reading of this book.  It may well inspire you to go through Pilgrims Progress again and maybe several others of Bunyan’s writings including his own autobiography.  There are rich treasures here, read and be increased in your understanding thereby!
