MORNING MUSING October 3rd 2009

The resurgence of the so-called ‘health, wealth and prosperity’ doctrine is a definite cause of irritation and even division in the churches.  It seems to pop up with regularity that makes it a real nuisance.  It may be dressed up with a new phrase or two but is the same old error that has shipwrecked many who have followed it in times past.

For some months I have wanted to write a few lines concerning what Bible calls “the weapons of our warfare.” (2 Corinthians 10v4)  Isaiah, the prophet of God, spoke in the midst of much national and international upheaval, perilous times when God’s people Israel were tempted to make alliances with one empire so as to protect themselves against another acting in a predatory way towards them.

I have heard people mention “the dominant motif’s of the scripture,” by which is meant the major themes to be found there as God began, continued and revealed the climax of all His works.  The subject of ‘power’ is one of these themes; how, when and where does the power of God work, what does the Bible show us as to His methods?

 

 

MORNING MUSING August 19, 2009

A younger man dropped by the house the other day; he wanted to share with us something he had read in one of Spurgeon’s sermons.  I think it had been sparked off by part of one of the messages he had heard whilst attending the meetings.  By the way, isn’t it good to think of someone reading Spurgeon’s sermons, and also that the fire of truth is being sparked from person to person?  But, back to the quote from Spurgeon, he used the word ‘doggish,’ that we human beings are often ‘doggish’ and all was in the context of a man with a stick beating a dog.
