R.T. Kendall is an American who ministered for twenty five years at Westminster Chapel in London and returned to the United States in 2002.  He is the author of a number of books and is from the Reformed background theologically, and studied at a Southern Baptist College and Oxford University, he also testifies to a charismatic experience.  His writings are to the point, practical and thoroughly biblical. He does not indulge in flights of fancy or speculation. Obviously this particular book is based upon the verses in 2 Corinthians chapter 12  where Paul the Apostle writes of his experience of his ‘thorn in the flesh’. Chapters included suggest various possibilities of what could constitute a thorn in the flesh in our lives. An Enemy, Unhappy Employment, Personality Problems, Money Matters along with seven other suggestions are the titles of chapters in this book.  Each possible ‘thorn’ is handled wisely and practically.  There is nothing hyper spiritual here, nothing particularly ‘deep’, rather we are encouraged to face clearly the positive purpose of God in that thing which we would pray would be removed.  The writer shows that both God and Satan are involved in these thorns.  The paradox that such are ‘a messenger of Satan,’ whilst also being a means of God’s grace is helpfully expounded. The reading of  this book will help each reader to identify that particular thing in their own life which could be defined as a thorn in the flesh. There is a pastoral tone to this writing which includes spiritual wisdom and personal insights.  You will benefit from reading this book and it will set in proper context the place of suffering in the life of a Christian.
