THE HEART OF HEALING

Those familiar with this particular publisher will know that many of the books issued by them tend toward the fringes of things Christian into that which is spiritualistic and occult.  With that in mind it is good to approach this little book with care.  It was written in the mid- seventies, by an Anglican minister who was led into the area of healing. An overall reading of the book conveys the impression of the centrality of Christ and His cross as being the ground of all healing.  The writer does not use the more questionable terms of ‘spiritual healing’, but rather ‘christian healing’ coming through Christ and His work on the cross made real and applied by the Spirit of God Who brings His presence to us.  At the time this book was written there were few who were emphasizing healing in this manner in mainline churches in Great Britain.  Within Pentecostal and the emergent charismatic churches there was an awareness and practice of prayer for the sick, but the methods advocated by this author, the concept of prayer groups and prayer services where the sick could be prayed for if present or even by proxy were not practiced much.  The book has a certain simplicity and beauty about it, leading us to the Lord Jesus as the fountain head of all our needs for spirit, soul and body.  The sense of excitement in the life of this minister is real as he walked the path of discovering that the Lord was indeed the healer of heart and bodies. There are a number of stories narrated which convey the thrill of seeing the Lord at work. This is a source of encouragement to the reader and the book does not promote faith methodologies and strong notions of ‘believe and confess and all will be done’.  Rather the book has a meekness about its tone, a dependency upon the Lord Jesus, it inspires us to come to Him, seeking His face for His mercies and grace to be extended in healing for the body as well as the soul.  Bearing in mind the caveats mentioned in this little book brief, there is blessing in this book.
