FOUR VIEWS ON THE BOOK OF REVELATION

This book is one of the Zondervan ‘Counterpoints’ series in which evangelical writers and scholars provide a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. The Counterpoints books address two categories: Church Life and Exploring Theology. Few books of the Bible are as fascinating or as unusual as the Book of the Revelation. As many Christians know, a number of interpretations have been developed since the days of the early church concerning the visions and content of Revelation. This particular small volume presents an opportunity for four evangelical Christian scholars to set out their particular viewpoints and then in a gentle way critique those of the other contributors. The book is not large, but quite fairly captures the main points of each interpretation. The critiques are written in a kindly spirit and there is no harshness present. Weaknesses and strengths of each view are considered by the editor of the book in the introductory chapter and the whole is presented helpfully. Those who have been challenged by the message of the Book of the Revelation and are seeking an understanding of its thrust and meaning will be assisted in their considerations by a reading of this book. Some may not realize that there are alternative views held in evangelical Christendom today, rather they have thought that the truth lies with the popularized version of one of the views presented in the fiction ‘Left Behind’ series of books. There are also many Christians who never read the book of the Revelation, baffled by its style and imagery they shy away from any interaction with it. Yet, there is blessing attached to the reading of it and the hearing of it read and solemn warning concerning adding to it or detracting from it. In the light of these things careful reading of it will surely benefit all. Some become fascinated with its imagery and use it as a book to determine the events of the ‘end times’. With boldness these interpretations appear and then require modification as time passes. Each of the contributors to this book regard the scriptures as inspired by God and therefore approach their particular interpretation with conviction and seriousness. Any wishing to interact with the various viewpoints will benefit from this book, probably it will lead to further thought and study and prayerful consideration. From each viewpoint there are points of challenge and encouragement to be gained, so, although the book could be regarded as ‘lighter theological interpretation’, there is edification to be gained by going through it.
