Tempted and Tried

Author RUSSELL D. MOORE Publisher   CROSSWAY ISBN 1-433-515-806

Moore is Dean of the School of Theology at Southern Baptist Seminary and by the way he writes I would sense that he is not yet and older man.  His style is pretty racy, but in a scholarly way.  Obviously he is dealing with the issues of sin and temptation in way that is thoroughly Biblical and often helpfully enlightening.  The fact that temptation and trial is common to all of us this book is a worthwhile read for all of us though some might find it a bit complex in the way certain elements of truth are presented.  However, there are many ways in which the temptations the devil brought to the Lord Jesus in the desert days are brought into very clear relief and specific to both our individual and church life today in this book.  Basically this author shows how the wicked one has the intention to rob us of our true identity in Christ.  “If You are the Son”.  There is perceptiveness, comfort and strengthening in this book, probably it is the best one I have myself read on this subject.  Moore is very free in his language, describing certain temptations in some details, using a vocabulary that gets specific and some might feel a little crude and even unnecessary.  Yet, there is a sense that that very fact rams home the message of the subtlety, deceptiveness and awful power our enemy uses to entice and trap the Lord’s people.  The necessity of trial is well presented here, the fact that it has a number of purposes in God’s economy for our lives and that the enemy is still an agent of God though attempted to work against Him.  Many are caught unawares in the earlier stages of the processes of temptation; Moore shows that very clearly in this scripture filled presentation.  Sin has ramifications far beyond the fact of itself.  We need to receive the help given by a book like this so that we can focus our attention on obtaining the victory that is through Jesus Christ our Lord.
