The author is Rector of St Ebbe’s Oxford and is no stranger to ministry amongst university students.  This book is aimed at young Christians of all ages and is a realistic and helpful examination of some areas of struggle in the Christian life.  It is to be regarded as an introduction to the subject and the chapters take us through something of the causes and cure of such matters as depression, doubt, lust, image, guilt, pride and homosexuality.  This author is down to earth and Biblical in his approach and handles his subject matter sensibly.  For instance, he deals with lust not only in the usual sexual realm but also in such things as chocolate and perfume.  His chapter on image is telling in the way he exposes the sheer foolishness of being trapped in the vortex of both creating and sustaining our identity along the lines of ‘image’.  He sees the answer to the folly of ‘image’ in the gift of a new identity in Christ Jesus.  It is worth pointing out that clearly Vaughan Roberts has the purpose of encouraging Christians to see that the struggles are real, and, in some cases very much part and parcel of the life of a believer.  That each Christian can be equipped to deal with these enemies and he points to various aspects of the spiritual equipment.  Finally, he clearly shows that the goal of godly living in which God is glorified in us is something attainable, it is our true hope.  This is a book to encourage perseverance unto victory; it is not a long book, about one hundred and fifty pages and worth obtaining.
